An excerpt from "I Have A Dream"
This will be the day when all of God’s children will be able to sing with a new meaning, “My country, ‘tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. Land where my fathers died, land of the pilgrim’s pride, from every mountainside, let freedom ring.”
And if America is to be a great nation this must become true. So let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire. Let freedom ring from the mighty mountains of New York. Let freedom ring from the heightening Alleghenies of Pennsylvania!
Martin Luther King Jr.
Martin Luther King Jr. was a civil rights activist during the civil rights movement in the United States throughout the 1950’s and 1960’s. He advocated for the increase in the rights of minorities especially African Americans, especially their voting rights. One of his most famous speeches during his shortened life was his “I Have A Dream” speech that he gave in Washington D.C on August 28, 1963 in front of nearly 250,000 people. As he was one of the most influential and important civil rights activists of the time period, and with this speech being in front of so many people, his "I Have A Dread" speech was a very significant part of the history of equality. Martin Luther King Jr. stood up to the what was accepted in America for the betterment of his people, he was a voice for those who didn’t have a voice. This made him the quintessential American Rebel.
Martin Luther King Jr. was not just the classic American Rebel, he started a movement throughout the United States and created a whole new generation of Rebels. We see the impact of what Martin Luther King Jr. did even today with the riots that have happened throughout the country by those fighting for equal rights. Although Dr. King did not encourage the violent riots that are often happening in our modern time, he did look for people to stand up for themselves and rebel against that which they saw as unfair. His philosophy of rebelling against the unfairness and cruelty in America was to follow his religious doctrines and ask that his followers do he same. Martin Luther King Jr. was a visionary and a man that looked out for others more than himself but most importantly he was a Rebel who stood up for what he believed in.

Kurt Cobain has often been referred to as the last great rock star, a musical genius with an angry and altogether winning growl. Nirvana, in their short time together, enjoyed enormous and dizzying success before the internet changed how we communicate and consume.
Motley Crue may have sung about Girls, Girls, Girls but Cobain instead vaunted outspoken actress Frances Farmer, who battled mental illness and alcoholism. One of the first rockers to appear on the cover of the LGBT magazine The Advocate, Cobain often wore dresses while performing. He and his bandmate Krist Novoselic freely kissed, riling up homophobes in conservative pockets of the U.S.
Kurt Cobain
A more modern example of an American Rebel would be the story of Kurt Cobain. Starting off as face of a iconic rock band, Nirvana, Kurt Cobain was on the fast track to having an amazing rock career. Unfortunately, his life was cut short and is often referred to as the last great rock star. Not only was Cobain an amazing artist but he was an American Rebel for what he believed in. He believed in many things that were not so popular at the time such as LGBT rights, the feminist movement, increased women's rights and other movements that were not main stream or accepted. Cobain also created music that was for rebellion and that became popular anthems with teenagers during the 1980's and 90's as a way for the them to rebel against their parents. Kurt Cobain was an amazing rock star but he also used his voice on stage to stand up for those who did not necessarily have the voice during the time.
One such story about Kurt Cobain was that in school he befriended a gay boy who was bullied constantly. He wanted to help him. Soon Cobain was being bullied as much as his friend because they thought he was gay along with the other boy. Cobain did not care, he continued to hang around the boy even though it was becoming painful for him. He just cared for others. His support of the LGBT and feminist movement and his kindness for others showed how he was a positive rebel in America. He was also a negative rebel in America because he created music that supported teenagers rebelling against their parents. No matter what way you look at it, Kurt Cobain was a popular musical rock star, an influential man, who stood up for what he believed in and stood up for the rights of others who could not. He was an American Rebel.

During the American Revolution, he led the colonial forces to victory over the British and became a national hero. In 1787, he was elected president of the convention that wrote the U.S. Constitution. Two years later, Washington became America’s first president. Realizing that the way he handled the job would impact how future presidents approached the position, he handed down a legacy of strength, integrity and national purpose.
George Washington
The original American Rebel was George Washington. He was the man who set up our country and created the great nation we have today. Not only did he allow our modern day America to become what it is today but he was the first American to stand up against the powers over him and fight for what he believed in, literally. He was the commander of the Continental Army in the revolutionary war that defeated the British. Defeated the British for our independence as a nation. He later became the first President of United States America. In this position he also made choices that were not always the favorable ones with others but they were the choices that he needed to be made to make our country better. He created the idea of being an American Rebel nearly 300 years ago.
When the British invaded the United States because of our growing rebellion against the crown, the American people looked to a certain group of men to lead us into the new age in our history. George Washington was one of those men that they turn to and he led the rebellion against the British government and crown to do what he believed was right for our country, to become independent from others rule. George Washington was the first American Rebel and he laid the groundwork for modern day rebels and those who stand up for what they believe in.
